Many of us have stressful and long semesters, or even semesters where it feels like there isn’t time for anything other than to sleep, eat, and study.
However, during these stressful semesters it is so important to make time to take care of yourself and make sure you are staying healthy.
Being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day and eating healthy foods has been seen to increase your life expectancy by up to 4 years – that’s a crazy amount of time!
Exercise also keeps our endorphins flowing which make you feel better and has actually shown to increase learning and memory.
If you’re struggling to motivate yourself to stay healthy during the semester or need some tips on how to find time to work out, here are some things that work for me and I hope they can work for you, too!

Tips to staying healthy during college:
Wake up earlier to work out
I have found that I am so much more productive in the mornings, and once 5:00pm hits, I can never get myself to the gym. Even if you’re not a morning person, try waking up early and make it to the gym and see the difference it makes on your body.
Whether it be a 30-minute walk at an incline on the treadmill or an intense full body workout, it helps you wake up and start your day and you get more done!
Work out in your apartment or dorm
Some people hate the gym for all kinds of different reasons, but this shouldn’t stop you from getting your daily dose of exercise. If you hate the gym, try working out in your apartment/dorm with these easy workouts:
- Do as many sit ups as you can during commercials or theme songs of your favorite TV shows- if you’re gonna binge and watch multiple episodes on Netflix in one day, this is so awesome especially if you watch shows like the office, then every 30 minutes or so, you’re doing sit ups!
- Do 20 Squats every time you get an email from your school- I am not sure how relevant this is to every institution, but I get about 10-20 emails from my school per day, so that’s a lot of squats!
- Wear ankle weights around your place- this sounds nuts, I know. But I just invested in some ankle weights from TJ MAXX and they were like $5. I wear them around my apartment, especially when I am cleaning so I’m moving around a lot and my calves are so sore the next day!
- Get out your mat and do some yoga in the living room- if you’re in for a less intense workout, try doing some calming yoga to relieve stress while still moving your body!
Find a gym buddy or take a group fitness class
If you hate working out alone, or need some instruction, find a workout buddy. There are also generally a lot of fitness classes offered at your institution gym that are free with your membership or for a small fee. This can help you gain a routine and maybe find some other ways to work out that you have never thought of before!
Park further away from your destination
Whether it be campus or a department story, start parking at the back of the lot and get in those extra steps every day. Remember 10,000 steps is the recommended amount for a healthy lifestyle!
Go on a walk without headphones
I always find this option to be the most fun! Many times, when you are walking down the street, we put our headphones in to get from point A to point B without being bothered.
If you’re going on a walk around the neighborhood or in your dorm, walk without headphones. Smile at the people passing and get to know some of your neighbors, this not only helps you get your steps in, but it’s fun to get to know the people around you and/or people watch on a busy street.
Non-fitness tips to staying healthy during college:
Carry a water bottle with you everywhere
Literally everywhere, you have no idea how much water you will drink in one day without even noticing it! Drinking more water also helps give you clear skin and makes you glow, so killing two birds with one stone with this one!
Follow fitness accounts for inspiration
I love following fitness and healthy lifestyle accounts, many of these accounts only post about healthy living. They will post workouts, recipes, and awesome tips that you have never even thought of that could work so well with your lifestyle!
Buy colorful foods
And of course, the obvious way to stay healthy in college is to fill your body with foods that are not only healthy for you, but foods that you enjoy. Fill your fridge and cabinets with colorful foods, so every meal or snack, you have a healthy serving of fruits and veggies that will be great for your body!
The hardest part of staying healthy in college is your mindset, if you constantly tell yourself “I’ll start tomorrow or next week”, you will never be as fit as you could be today. Starting is the hard part, once you’ve started, it all comes easier after that!
There are so many ways to keep yourself healthy during college, even when it feels like there is no time to do so! I hope these tips have helped you to find a way to change-up your routine to staying/or getting fit in college!
