College can be overwhelming. Especially in the beginning: everything is new and confusing and unfamiliar.
Luckily, you’re not alone. And, a ton of people before you have made it through.
Here are a few things to check off your list in your first days to help you settle in and feel like you’ve got it together before classes get serious.
Seems obvious, right? But really, finish putting everything as quick as you can, and by that I mean, don’t let it go past a couple of days. It’s worth getting your stuff organized so that when you’re stressed with classes, you’ll know where everything is and it will be one less thing to worry about. If you’re anything like me, messy rooms make it hard to focus on work.
Check out a few clubs
This might be the most obvious, but it’s really a must. Even if you don’t fully join one your first week, at least attend a few general interest meetings of a few you might want to join. You may find your next favorite activity, a new friend, or at the very least help you find a club you definitely don’t want to join, and that’s helpful, too! If you think you’ll be overwhelmed with coursework, no worries! Go to the meetings, grab some free food, and consider your options for next semester.
Find Your Classes
It’s likely you’ll have some free time before your classes actually start. One of the days, take a walk around campus and see what buildings and rooms your classes will be in.
See how long it will take you to get to each building to another, as well as from your dorm, so you won’t be late the first day.
make your college binder
This is a super simple way to keep all your important papers together. See my post on how to make one here.
asses your syllabus
Grading system? Big projects? Days off? Your syllabus will tell you this and more. Make the most of your syllabus with help from this post
I know, it isn’t the easiest thing for everyone to walk up to someone new and try to get to know them.
But, it’s worth a shot. I have met some of the best people that way.
Everyone is nervous. If you come up and introduce yourself, they’ll more than likely be relieved that they didn’t have to.
You’re all in the same ride. It’s better when you have someone to ride with.
I hope you’re as excited as I am for you!
