Love traveling but hate flying? Same here. If you’re like me, flying is often the worst part of my trip. For whatever reason, even if the whole process goes smoothly, I always find myself anxious until I land at my destination.
On a recent trip, and while studying abroad, I discovered a few ways to ease my mind on the plane.
Wear Comfortable Clothes
I know then when you’re anxious, it can manifest itself in physical symptoms. It can also heighten senses and make regular things feel overwhelming.
To avoid this as best as possible, wear clothes you feel comfortable in.
It will be one less thing to worry about during your plane ride.
Eat something to trick your brain
The desire to eat is one of the oldest, most natural responses to feeling stressed or anxious.
Eating, at least momentarily, helps the brain feel safe and calmer. It’s why that tub of ice cream after a breakup or when you should be studying is so appealing. Your brain assumes that because you’re eating, everything must be okay.
You don’t have to eat a ton of food on a plane ride to make this work for you. Finding a long-lasting candy or gum can help trick your brain into thinking you’re eating a lot and will help soothe your nerves.
For this, I’d recommend gum, soft caramels, or any hard candy.
Focus on a task
Coloring, doing crossword puzzles, reading – anything of this sort can help distract you by engaging your mind.
Listen to Music
Listening to music can be a super relaxing way to distract yourself. Make a playlist of songs you love and hit shuffle.
Focus on different elements of the music, like the lyrics or background rhythms and melodies.
Practice Affirmations
Affirmations can help quiet the stressful thoughts that anxiety brings. Prepare a few affirmations that you can call on when you start to feel stressed.
Try things like “I am safe and secure” or “Things will go well, even if they are not as planned.”
Repeat and focus on these ideas to help calm your mind.
